| Tumaini La Kesho (Hope for the Future) is a troupe of young Congolese artists. Their performances encompass traditional drumming, song, dance, and theatre. The troupe is based in Bukavu, South Kivu province, an area of the Democratic Republic of Congo where the civilian population continues to suffer greatly through the ongoing civil war. Members include ex-child soldiers, orphans, children banished by their families having been accused of witchcraft. They belong to many ethnic local and refugee or internally displaced communities that have settled in Bukavu.
- The troupe helps integrate children, some with deeply troubled pasts, back into the community and their peers.
- It provides them with an avenue for artistic and cultural expression.
- Performances in communities that have been scarred by ethnic conflict help spread the message of peace and reconciliation where it is most needed.
The troupe was formed in 2005 by Juvénal Muderhwa, an activist and a founder of the Association de Soutient aux Opprimé (ASO), a local non-governmental organisation involved in demobilisation and re-integration of child soldiers. It has received the support of Search for Common Ground, an NGO that works with local partners, such as ASO, to find culturally appropriate means to strengthen societies' capacity to deal with conflicts constructively: to understand the differences and act on the commonalities."
